Nico had been given exceptional amounts of advice regarding his magic focus, but he'd be lying if he said he took the advice. Izar was a great friend of his, and he liked listening to Izar... but that didn't mean that everything he said was good. Especially when it came to advice regarding his magical focus. But then again, that might come from the fact that Nicodemus didn't care much about 'being predictable' like Izar was. He was going to be a scholar, and a scholar needed his tomes....

When you were surrounded by other hatchlings, it was easy to have some things slip between the cracks when it came to properly navigating important experiences. With no parents, the little hatchlings not only got their charms around the same time as those the same age as them, but they had plenty of time to spend with their fellow younglings uninterrupted by adult supervision.
